On the morning of March 14, the sixth session of the Joint Management Committee (JMC) of the Sussex Artificial Intelligence Institute of Zhejiang Gongshang University was convened at the campus’s International Conference Center. The meeting was chaired by Gu Qing, Vice President of Zhejiang Gongshang University (ZJSU), with attendance from Wang Yonggui, President of ZJSU and Chair of the JMC; Prof. Robin Banerjee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex; other committee members, and representatives from relevant departments and faculties.
During the meeting, the new member list was approved by the JMC and the institute's annual budget plan for 2025. Both parties reached consensus on key agenda including amendments to establish doctoral-level programs, revisions to partnership agreements and charter provisions, as well as adjustments to academic curricula. A progress report on the institute's work for 2024 to 2025 was also presented.
President Wang extended warm welcome to the Sussex delegation. In his address, he commended the institute's remarkable achievements in talent cultivation and looked forward to future collaboration. He emphasized the need to advance joint doctoral programs, deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation, and explore new models for AI education. He is also committed to transforming the institute as a global leader in AI education, contributing to technological advancement and social development.
Prof. Robin Banerjee highlighted the institute's exceptional performance since its establishment five years ago, noting that outcomes had exceeded all expectations. He praised the innovative spirit demonstrated by enthusiastic faculty and students through their participation in medicine, sustainable development, and automotive engineering projects, which has underscored the institute's pivotal role in modern technological advancement. He expressed confidence that the partnership would continue attracting top students and expanding innovative domains.
Since its official approval in 2020, the Sino-UK collaborative institute has achieved remarkable outcomes within just five years. Currently, it hosts 773 full-time undergraduate students and 99 postgraduate students. Up till now, a total of 387 postgraduates in four grades graduated, with 60% attaining Distinction degrees from the University of Sussex. Many were admitted by renowned universities at home and abroad, about 15% of graduates have pursued doctoral studies, while over 50% have secured core positions in leading technology enterprises. Approximately 10% have joined public institutions and civil service positions. The 2024 undergraduate class has demonstrated outstanding outcomes, achieving a 59% postgraduate rate. Among them, 60 students will pursue overseas studies, including three direct doctoral admissions. Notably, 7 graduates received offers from QS World's Top 10 universities, and 30 were admitted to institutions ranked within the global top 50.
