On September 21st , ZJSU and University of Sussex convoked the 3rdJoint Management Committee(JMC) Meeting for the Sussex AI Institute of ZJSU online. Prof. Jianxing Yu, the President of ZJSU and the Chairperson of the JMC, Prof. Yantai Chen, the Vice President of ZJSU, Sasha Roseneil, the Vice Chancellor and President of University of Sussex, Richard Follet, the Vice President of University of Sussex, and heads of relevant departments and schools attended the meeting. The Vice President Yantai Chen chaired the meeting. 

President Yu noted that the most important mission for the Joint Institute is to put the main focus on strong demand of future industries, the digital government and digital society, committed to developing AI talents with an international vision, leading the new trend in AI worldwide and enabling the progress of the industry and the society. It is hoped to build a urgently-needed talent tank for China by college education, thus can we create an AI talent training chain with ZJSU characteristics.

Prof. Sasha Roseneil, gave a high appraisal of the achievements the Sussex AI Institute of ZJSU made in the past. Despite of the huge impact of the pandemic, the two sides had completed several tasks in quite a short time by concerted efforts, such as the establishment of the AI Institute, determination of the leadership, student recruitment, teacher deployment, curriculum connection, etc.. Faced with difficulties and challenges, the two universities will continue to work together, enhance communication and carry out innovative work, to jointly promote the cooperation to a higher level. 

Maziar Nekovee, Dean of the Joint Institute, made a report on the teaching operation and students' academic achievements by data analysis. He said that no matter what courses for undergraduates or postgraduates, the average scores of students in Joint Institute were generally higher than those of British students of the same major, especially in image recognition, digital applications, science and technology competitions. 63% of postgraduates has been granted as Distinction for their Master's Degree; nearly 20% of postgraduates were admitted to be doctoral students with scholarships, three of them were fully funded by the China Scholarship Council; more than 50% of graduates worked on the core positions of well-known domestic enterprises; many students have won awards and glories in important competitions at home and abroad .

The Joint Institute run by ZJSU and University of Sussex got the TNE-QE Kitemark issued by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) in 2021. And based on the joint education with ZJSU, the University of Sussex was nominated as one of the finalists forEducation Partnership of the Year Award by the British Chamber of Commerce in 2022; 4 outstanding undergraduates of the AI Institute were selected as International Junior Research Assistants by Sussex; joint PhD program were established in 2022 to encourage scientific research cooperation and jointly cultivate future scientific research talents.  

During the meeting, the two sides voted to approve the change of the members of the Joint Management Committee and discussed the plan of next year and the Halo Project. Moreover, work report, teaching operation , students' academic achievements of the Joint Institute in the first semester of 2022 were also reported and formed into resolutions in the end.

2022 marks the 50th Anniversary of Ambassadorial Diplomatic Relations between China and UK. Educational cooperation has been one important component of China-UK relations. And the Joint Institute are promoting the joint PhD program and building the team of PhD supervisors to innovate the model of talents cultivation and deepen research cooperation in the fields of AI and other disciplines.
