School of Humanities and Communication

The School of Humanities was established in 2004,and renamed to the School of Humanities and Communication in September 2010. The school consists of seven departments, including Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Department of Advertising, Department of Editing and Publishing, Department of Journalism, Department of Philosophy, Department of History, and Department of College Chinese. The school has established six undergraduate programs(Chinese Language and Literature, Advertising, Editing and Publishing, Journalism, Philosophy,and History),a Master program (Special History), and four centres and institutes (the Centre for China's Cultural Theory Innovation, the Centre for Comparative Literature and Culture, the Institute of Food Culture, and the Institute of Zhejiang Culture, and the Institute of Literature in China's Tourism. In addition, the school has favorable teaching facilities, a modern communication laboratory with the area of 400 square meters, 8000 books, 100 kinds of Chinese and foreign journals, and its total assets amount to 5 million yuans.

The school attaches importance to the construction of academic disciplines and programs. The academic disciplines such as Literary Theory, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literatuer, and Special History have laid steady foundations for their further development. Among them, Literary Theory is one of the key provincial academic disciplines. The school has 65 teachers, including 34 persons with the qualifications of PhD, 15 professors, 25 associate professors, 1 "Top Provincial Expert", 1 "Westlake Scholar", 2 "University's Specially-appointed Professors", 4 candidates for the Zhejiang Crosscentury's "151 Talent Project", 1 "Young and Middle-aged Academic Pacesetter of Zhejiang's Universities and Colleges". Some of them have enjoyed the special allowance offered by the State Council of PRC and The People's Government of Zhejiang Province. In the past five years, the major academic staff have published about 400 articles in Chinese and Foreign journals, more than 50 monograghs and textbooks, and have completed or are hosting almost 40 research projects. Many of the research results have won the awards from the authorities at different levels.

With a view to the needs of social development and the tendency of market variation, the school has taken the measure to adjust course structure, optimize curriculum system, and update the content of courses. It is through the adjustment and reform of the talent cultivation modes that some programs have clearly showed their features, eg., the undergraduate program in Advertising highlights creative advertising, and copywriting and planning; the program in Editing and Publishing lays stress on web editing and digitalized publishing; the program in Journalism pays more attention to financial news and information, etc. Tourism and Culture has been appraised as the Provincial Model Course. Introduction to Aesthetics, Classical Chinese, A History of Modern Chinese Literatuer, Book Editing, TV Program Editing, Publishing House Management and so forth have been pre-selected as the University's Model Courses. In the past five years, more that 40 articles on teaching research and educational reform have been published, and three projects at or over the level of provincial department in regard to educational reform have been approved.

There are over 1000 students at the school. The school takes humanistic cultivation, and innovation and application as its guiding principle, carrying out the strategy and plan of consolidating fundation, broadening knowledge, valuing innovation, and widening application. With the support of basic subjects, facing society and market, all the programs are designed to bring up the talents with humanistic accomplishment and innovative spirit. Over the years, the students of this school have gained a number of awards for the Students' Scientific Paper Contests at different levels and the students' innovative practices, etc. The employment rate of the graduates in the past five years has exceeded 90%. More than 100 graduates have been accepted as postgraduates by some famous universities home and abroad.   

The core of "humanity" is to care for man and his all-round development. The objective of the School of Humanities and Communication is to "uphold humanistic spirit and spread modern civilization", and cultivate the student to be a cultured person and a messenger of cultural communications.
